Sheffield house buying guide

Located 1.5 miles to the north west of Sheffield city centre, Crookes is a small village with a big personality.

It’s popular among students, young professionals and families alike, thanks to its wide choice of housing and prices to suit most budgets. 

With buses taking you into the city centre and surrounding areas, you don’t need a car to get around. There are plenty of good schools to choose from in both Crookes and its southern neighbour Broomhall.

As for things to do, try Crookes Valley Park, The Ponderosa, and Rivelin Valley. There’s also Holly Hagg Community Farm, where you can meet the cutest alpacas and even take them on a walk. 

With traditional taverns, Italian restaurants, and coffee shops dotted around the town, there’s no shortage of places to get a bite to eat or meet your friends. 

You’ll find Fulwood 3 miles west of Sheffield city centre. With the Peak District right on its doorstep, this is a town for those who crave a peaceful suburban life while also having easy access to one of the UK’s most popular cities. 

On Fulwood Road you’ll find independent pubs, restaurants, delis and takeaways. There are some convenience stores dotted throughout the town and a superstore in Berkeley Precinct, Ecclesall. 

To make the most of the great outdoors, we’d recommend Wyming Brook Nature Reserve, BlackBrook Wood, and Mayfield Alpaca Farm (yes, another one). Perfect for dog walks, picnics and memorable days out.

If you’re looking for somewhere to start a family or you already have children, there are a number of good primary and secondary schools nearby.

Found 7 miles north of Sheffield, Chapeltown is a little further from the city centre than Fulwood and Crookes. It makes up for it by being close to the motorway, having its own train station, and offering a selection of bus services. 

Throw good schools, green spaces, and beloved local businesses into the mix and it’s no wonder the town is one of the most desirable places to live in the whole of south Yorkshire.

If you’re struggling to afford a home in Chapeltown, you’ll find slightly cheaper properties in High Green without having to go too far north.
