History
Putteridge Bury has a history which can be traced back to the time of Edward the Confessor's time when there was a tax paid on the land. In 1556, a new manor house was build by Thomas Docwra, which still survives today as the Farm House. In 1808, the mansion was damaged in a fire which consumed the whole building, but in 1812 it was rebuilt in the Regency style half a mile from the original manor house. In 1908 the house was bought by the brewer Thomas Meadowns Clutterbuck, who pulled down the mansion and rebuilt it for the last time in a style similar to Chequers.
The rest of Putteridge is a relatively new area, with many of its homes being built in the 1930s. To the north of Putteridge, you’ll find Butterfield Business Park. There are plans to expand the park even further. It’s predicted this will boost the local economy and create hundreds of new jobs!
